Slack GIPHY Commands With Examples

We have talked about how Slack’s own team uses emoji to convey information, and how they are much more than mere images or symbols. GIFs are similar to emojis. The difference is that GIFs are more casually used and are way more expressive than emojis.

If you don’t already know, GIPHY is the world’s large GIF search engine, and currently serves over 1 billion GIFs everyday. And, they have built an integration with Slack that allows us to search and add GIFs in a private conversion, a channel or even in a group message.

There are so many ways to use GIPHY in Slack to find the right GIFs and send them. In this guide, we will show you how to use Giphy in Slack, top Slack Giphy commands and ways to use GIPHY in Slack.

First to get started with GIPHY, you need to ensure that your Slack workspace has GIPHY installed in it. To install GIPHY on your Slack workspace, go to the GIPHY Slack app directory page and click on “Add to Slack”.

How To Use GIPHY In Slack To Send GIFs?

There are a lot of ways to send a GIF using GIPHY on Slack.

Using GIPHY with “/” command

To send GIPHY GIFs in Slack using command, you can open any conversation and type “/giphy”.

Any keyword you type after it would pull up a relevant GIF. For example, typing /giphy random generates this GIF

Right now it is in preview, we can click on “send” to send the GIF. Or if you think this isn’t the right GIF, you can click on “Shuffle” and get a new GIF

Once you found the one that you would like to share, you can click “Send”. And, your random GIF will be posted to the channel or private message.

Note: When you use broad keywords, you are highly likely to find a GIF that is slightly unrelated to what you are looking for in GIF. You will then have to shuffle through to find the perfect GIF. However, if you switch to a GIPHY slack command that has more keywords in it or if it is a well known reference, GIPHY can be extremely accurate in serving what you exactly need.

For example, typing “/giphy this is fine” (a well known reference) pulls up this GIF

Adding Captions With Slack GIPHY Commands

To add a caption to a Slack GIPHY you can use the following syntax to get a GIF with the desired caption:

/giphy #caption “add your caption quote here”

Let’s try this out with a few examples.

/giphy #caption “okay”

This will pull up the following GIF with a caption “okay” in it

/giphy #caption “party”

You can also use multiple words per caption as shown in the example below

/giphy #caption "are you coming"

Pretty great way to ask if your co-worker is going to come for lunch, right? Jokes aside, you can use these Slack GIPHY commands with caption to generate GIFs for pretty much any situation or occasion. It takes some time for you to get used to it, but once you begin to use them, you will find it effortless to create these GIFs.

Specifying Caption And GIF Using GIPHY Slack Commands

So far, we have seen either how to use captions or how to select GIFs. You can use the following command to specify both of them on the same command. Here is what the overall syntax for such a Slack GIPHY command would look like:

/giphy #caption “add your caption here” <add your="" gif="" keyword="" here=""></add>

We can break this syntax down to understand it better:

  • /giphy initiates searching for a GIF on GIPHY
  • #caption along with “add your caption here” writes a caption to a selected GIF type
  • <add your="" gif="" keyword="" here=""> is the keyword that GIPHY will use to search its GIF database</add>

Let us try the new caption + GIPHY keyword Slack command with a few examples.
